Falling Foss map

The woodland around Littlebeck is some of the most beautiful in North Yorkshire. It is ancient mixed forest of beech, oak, holly and sycamore amongst other species. It is a remarkably clear forest underfoot and flooded with light in many places. The forest floor is carpeted with wild flowers and I actually counted nearly 30 different species in a distance of about a mile.
There are many paths through the forest other than the ones marked on the OS map and it is possible to lose your way for a while. The most convenient parking is near to Midge Cafe. This is a popular spot at week-ends but few people venture very far into the woods (sadly - if at all) and so walking in this forest can be a beautifully calm and meditative experience.
Photographically, the forest is excellent, with many majestic beeches and oaks as well as picturesque pathways and a lot of wildlife and wild flowers.
I was there in the middle of the day in May and the trees were not yet fully out in leaf.
I recommend using the OS map which can be seen at this link here:
