At the top of Garrowby Hill there is a parking space on the left (indicated here in red) for about 4 cars. Walk about 50 yards further along the road and take the first left down the farm track. This track runs all the way to Kirby Underdale. There are many ancient majestic trees on the way down and also a wide beautiful view over the valley. I went on a sunny afternoon in January and so managed to capture some of the beautiful light. It's about 1.25 miles to Kirby Underdale and so the whole walk is about 2.5 miles, though a little steep on the way back up. I've marked the walk that I took in purple on the map illustrated here and it's easy to extend this walk up the other side of the valley with several paths to choose from. It’s a charming and slightly olde-world village centre which caters well for visitors. This is a short 4 kilometre walk on a circular route up into the Ellerburn valley and down the other side back into Thornton (marked here in purple). This walk takes in woodland paths with an abundance of wild flowers, plus impressive wide views over the Yorkshire Wolds and also into the Ellerburn valley. Several walks can be started from here running north into Dalby forest and I would highly recommend buying an excellent and beautifully illustrated booklet called [color=black]“Wildflower Walks around Pickering, Thornton Dale, Dalby Forest” by Nan Sykes[/color] which contains many walks into the area. It is a beautifully overgrown and neglected canal and in summer is full of wildlife. From York, take the turning for the A1079 at the Hull roundabout on the ring road. Follow this past the sign for Barmby Moor and Pocklington. After the next roundabout, the Canal Head is on the right just opposite the Red House pub. You can park here on the right (marked in red on the map) and walk along the towpath from here. This upper part of the canal is quite overgrown but makes pleasant and easy walking. It has created spectacular views in a west facing direction along its whole length. It is a popular walking spot in summer because if you just walk along the top of the cliff, then it is level with good paths all the way. It is much more varied than this, however, if you walk through the woodland down to the Kilburn White Horse or to Gormire lake. It is probably a 4 mile walk in either the north or south direction from the visitor’s centre and fairly strenuous if you descend the cliff to the horse or the lake. The quickest way from York would be to take the A19 north and turn onto the A170 just before Thirsk. It is a slightly longer but more interesting route to take the B1363 from the York ring road and turn onto the A170 before reaching Helmsley. Given how close it is to the town, Hookstone wood is a remarkably ancient and beautiful patch of beech woodland containing many photogenic specimen trees and a small lake. After passing through the wood, the path takes you by the edge of other woodland with views of the railway viaduct and eventually on the Harrogate Ringway path to a second viaduct on the disused part of the railway. There are many opportunities for photography in the woods with the beautiful trees and woodland flowers including wood anemones and bluebells in spring. Out of the wood there are excellent views over the fields to the viaducts. I walked this footpath in early May and intend to return in autumn when the beeches and silver birches are turning. There was a flock of 12 kites in the sky on the edge of the woodland. I've never seen so many. This short 4 mile walk is a gem. With woodland glades, beautiful views from the moor into the valleys, aerial displays of Lapwings and skylarks and abandoned stone cottages, it is simply stunning every step of the way. About 75 minutes from York, 10 minutes from Whitby Park at the Moors Centre and walk 50 yards up to the top of the road to the signed gate which leads up the hill under the glade of beech trees. Once on the moor and down the other side, there are several criss-crossing paths and I advise buying the OS map OL27 at the Moors Centre. You will be completely spoiled for choice with the photography. Look out for the derelict stone walls and cottages, the many streams running into small ravines. It is ancient mixed forest of beech, oak, holly and sycamore amongst other species. It is a remarkably clear forest underfoot and flooded with light in many places. The forest floor is carpeted with wild flowers and I actually counted nearly 30 different species in a distance of about a mile. There are many paths through the forest other than the ones marked on the OS map and it is possible to lose your way for a while. The most convenient parking is near to Midge Cafe. This is a popular spot at week-ends but few people venture very far into the woods (sadly - if at all) and so walking in this forest can be a beautifully calm and meditative experience. Photographically, the forest is excellent, with many majestic beeches and oaks as well as picturesque pathways and a lot of wildlife and wild flowers. I was there in the middle of the day in May and the trees were not yet fully out in leaf. This is a short walk of 3-5 miles depending where you start from and passes through the Studley Royal Estate on a public footpath for which is free to access; you do not need a ticket to follow this walk. Take the B6265 road and Fountain's Abbey is signed from this road, about a mile out of Ripon. Following the sign will take you on one of the estate roads. You will pass the obelisk on your left and arrive at one of the car parks near the visitors centre (NB, this estate road is locked at 6.30 pm!). Walk back up this road and the footpath begins at a gate just before the obelisk. This footpath actually goes across the deer park but there are clear paths which run down to the lake where you can pick up the 5 bridges walk footpath. The grounds on this footpath are studded with beautiful ancient trees and woodland. The footpath goes around the edge of the lake, across the weir and then follows a wooded valley on the edge of the estate. For a longer walk, this footpath joins up with another that runs across the southern edge of the estate but will take you back to the car park. Guise Cliff to Yorke's Folly Walk. A stunningly beautiful short walk through ancient woodland to Guise Cliff and Yorke's Folly. Take the B6165 from Knaresborough to Pateley Bridge. Just before Pateley Bridge is the village of Glasshouses on the left. You can park in the village and start the walk from there. Walk down to the river, across and up the hill. The footpath splits but take the right fork to the farm. Just above the farm you enter Guise Cliff Wood. Turn immediately right alongside the fence and then follow the footpath up into the wood towards Guise Cliff. It is worth making a detour off to the right to the tarn. The footpath eventually turns to the left alongside the base of the cliff and after about half a mile you can walk onto the cliff to join the Nidderdale Way. Turn right and walk along the cliff to Yorke's Folly. Then follow the path down to the road and return by the road to Glasshouses. The wood is criss-crossed with footpaths and I advise using the OS map. There is a small car park by the road about 400 yarks from Yorke's folly if you just wish to go up to this landmark. At the top of Garrowby Hill there is a tall metal radio mast on the left. Opposite this is a turning for Great Givendale. There is parking space (marked in red on this map) for 2-3 cars on the left as you reach the village. Walk another 50 yards and turn left down the lane. At the bottom of the lane, turn right to pass the beautiful old church on your right, in its charming country setting. Walk along the field past the ponds on your right and then down the lane for about 100 yards and take the right fork down the hill. This path goes through 5-bar gates into a long meadow. At the bottom of the hill, a wooden bridge crosses Whitekeld beck. You can cross the beck and up the hill to follow the Minster Way but I turned left through the 5-bar gate 50 yards before the beck. This follows a farm track along a meadow down the the ponds in Whitekeld Dale. In summer, the meadow is full of wild flowers and several species of butterflies. However, I was there on a sunny afternoon in January and these photos show the low winter sun. The walk marked here in purple is about 1.5k each way but you can easily extend this walk down the Minster Way to the charming village of Millington and on summer week-ends there is a small cafe (with toilet) open. The distance from Great Givendale to Millington is about 3k. This walk is very varied photographically and once in the Sculpture park itself there is such a wealth of photographic material that you could walk this area 2 or 3 times without repeating yourself. Most of the images here were taken on a dull, drizzly day but there are several more images of this walk taken in the winter on the first page of the Monochrome Landscape portfolio. The short walk described here is 3-5 miles depending how far you walk around the park. There are several public footpaths which arrive at the Sculpture park. I parked just off the A636 and walked to the Sculpture park from there. Leaving the M1 at junction 39, take the A636 signed for Denby Dale. About 400 yards past the roundabout junction with the A637 there is a small road off to the right at the brow of the hill. There is parking space here for several cars. Opposite this turning there is a gate and a broad track which is the start of the walk. Alternatively, you can leave the M1 at junction 38 and park within the Sculpture park itself. The park itself is beautiful in an ancient stately-home way with mature trees and grounds, lakes, paths and woodland and then there is the sculpture itself. The first time I was here I did photograph quite a few sculpture details. This time I decided to concentrate on some of the park itself and all of the images here were taken on a 2 hour walk around the lower lake. In other portfolios related to time and memory, one of the ideas that has always intrigued me is that of the layering of memory over time, and on this day, because of the ancient nature of the site, I decided to focus on that idea and photograph particular parts such as ancient bridges and trees with people walking through the site. In each case, I've waited until the person was some distance away to make them small in the frame compared to the main parts of the image. This device is to introduce the idea of the transience of our short life compared to the ancient nature of the site itself. The park is situated just of the M1 motorway at junction 38. From York, take the A1079 and turn off through Pocklington to about a mile past the left turn off for Kilnwick Percy. There is a small lay-by on the left just before a left turn (marked on the map in red). This small area is a hidden gem in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds. From this parking point there are two short walks: Walk 1: If you prefer a woodland walk, then this walk is immediately more interesting. It is two long strips of ancient beech woodland which are beautiful in spring and spectacular in autumn. If you are there in autumn, I recommend first walking along the road for about half a mile before returning to the footpath sign that leads into the wood. Follow the path into the wood and it leads down into a small valley and then up and along two long strips of beech woodland. At the bottom of the second strip, turn right along the bottom of the field and at the end of the field either turn left at the stile down through Bratt wood to the village of Nunburnholme. Alternatively, turn right at the stile and walk back up to the road. Walk 2 follows a square shape: Turn left and walk up the road as far as the triangulation point (you will see a triangle of trees on your right and a footpath sign). Walk down the path by the side of the field to the small wood. Turn right along the bottom of the field until you meet the road. Turn right on the road back to the original point. On this walk there are fine views over the wolds and several outstanding and photogenic trees. Over summer, several of the Moors Buses run between Helmsley and Rievaulx from 10.00 am until about 4 pm making this a one-way walk. This is a short 3 mile walk from the beautiful small town of Helmsley to the equally beautiful village of Rievaulx. In one direction it is not much more than 3 miles and is gentle and not very variied in the middle but is so marvellous at each end that it more than compensates for that. Take the B1363 out of York to Helmsley and park in the long stay car park. The walk starts at the broad track opposite the public toilets. You can walk there and bus back in the afternoon but If you want to bus there and walk back, then walk to the town square and pick up a bus timetable at the monument or at the library. The Moors Bus goes from the Monument. NB. most of the buses go from in front of the monument but the most direct one at 10.30 am goes from THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD. There are several buses back in the afternoon from the Rievaulx Abbey car park (times written on a blackboard at the entrance). Look out for: Make sure you turn round at the top of the hill out of Helmsley and see the view of the castle. Both the Helmsley Castle and Rievaux Abbey sites are exceptionally photogenic and many excellent images can be taken from the roadside. Stop and eat at Helmsley Walled Garden where the food is excellent and the flower photography superb. Photographically, this is a varied walk with lakes and timeless classical architecture set into the Castle Howard parkland. Also, woodland views and views across open fields to Welburn village, which is itself very photogenic. Park on the side of the road, just before Welburn village. The way is signposted from this spot. Walk down the field track, then up the hill towards the wood. The way is signposted here where two paths cross. The path you want turns left, along the top of a field, but if you make a small detour turning right (down into the wood) there is a massive lone standing oak and then a ruined cottage in the wood. Retrace your steps to the signpost and then follow the other path along the top of the field, then through the wood, turning left at the monument. About half a mile on, take a right turn at the signpost towards Castle Howard. From now on you can see the various landmarks such as the bridge over the lake, the Mausoleum and the Temple, which will guide your way. Alternatively, turn right at the stile and walk back up to the road. https://www.davidsaultphotography.com/spofforth-walk-map https://images.on-this.website/6041_16876091995b0828ddaeaa0.jpgSpofforth Walk map This is a lovely short 4 kilometre walk from the village of Spofforth near Harrogate. As you drive into Spofforth from the York direction, there is a sharp right downhill turning off Harrogate Road into a small housing estate. Drive down through the estate for about 100 yards and there is a small car park on the left by the children’s playground. Fifty yards further on through the estate is the beginning of Harland Way, the disused railway track. Continue along Harland Way for about 1.5 kilometres until you come to a lane which crosses the path. Turning left will take you to Crimple beck but turning right will take you back on a circular route through Stockeld Grange farm and then over the Harrogate Road and through Stockeld Park. Watch out for a right turning on a broad path alongside a wood. If you reach Sicklinghall wood on your left, you have gone too far down the path. This right turning will take you on the return journey back to Spofforth. I walked this route in early May. Because of the exceptionally late 2018 spring, the different coloured beeches in Stockeld park had just come into leaf. Also, there were many wild flowers such as bluebells, jack by the hedge and so on which were in full bloom. It was a sunny day at mid-day and so the light was harsh and unremarkable, however, the walk was alive with all kinds of wildlife along the disused railway. From the Hull roundabout, take the B1228 for Elvington. Go through Sutton on Derwent and cross both the river Derwent and the Pocklington canal. Go on to the village of Melbourne where you can park by the side of the road near the "Melbourne" pub. There is a broad track just before the pub which takes you down to the canal past a small parking area for barges. From here you can walk the towpath in either direction. Apart from the one of the Canal Head, most of these autumn photos were taken between here and Bielby. On the way back through Sutton on Derwent watch out for the sun setting over the river there (see the last photo in this set). https://www.davidsaultphotography.com/plumpton-rocks https://images.on-this.website/6041_16298456825b0ba6917fabf.jpgPlumpton Rocks Plumpton Rocks are part of Plumpton Park which is on the Harrogate road, 30 minutes drive from York, near Follifoot. There is a small fee to go into the park and it is only open to the public at week-ends from March to October. There is actually a public footpath that runs through the park and several other woodland walks nearby but I would highly recommend paying the small fee and walking around the lake and the rocks because the site is remarkably beautiful, ancient and has been preserved in it's natural state. The ancient trees and rock formations are spectacular and it would help to have a super-wide lens to photograph them (which I didn't have with me on this day). It takes about an hour to wander around the lake and through the wooded area and there is an overwhelming feeling of age and calm. The rocky areas are overgrown with ancient yew trees and beeches and are quite cool on a hot summer's day. Kirkham Priory is an extensive ruin situated by the river Derwent in a picturesque valley just off the A64 Scarborough road. Its an interesting and varied walk photographically, incorporating the ruin, the river Derwent and both open fields and woodland. There are two weirs and also a beautiful old arched bridge which crosses the Derwent at this point. The images shown here were all taken on a dull winter's day with very little colour around. The river was in flood, but there was an interesting sky, and so this tends to appear in most of the images. There are many footpaths but the one I've outlined would be about 6 or 7 miles long in total if you do the whole route. From York, take the A64 towards Scarborough. Just past the left turning for Castle Howard, the dual carriageway climbs a steep hill and a right turning for Kirkham is immediately at the top of this hill. Its easy to overshoot and miss the turning. From York, it is just under an hour's drive. Take the A59 towards Harrogate and turn onto the A168 just before the A1 roundabout. The A168 takes you on a beautiful autumn road and then on a country road up to the village of Grewelthorpe. There is a nice community cafe on your left as you pass through the village. The alternativee route is to go a bit further up the A1 and along to Masham where there are a couple of nice galleries and cafes. There is a small car park at the beginning of the walk, about a mile up the road from Grewelthorpe right at the top of the hill, on a bend in the road (blink and you'll miss it). This is the best entrance to the woods in order to do a circular walk which will take in two viewpoints, the river and three follies (marked on this map in purple). Walk out of the car park through the gate in the corner and follow the muddy path down the field for about 200 yards to the woods. I was there on a bright sunny autumn day and so there is no subtlety about these images; all are underexposed to capture the the light and colour on the autumn foliage and the water. A short 3 mile walk through an incredibly beautiful ancient wooded valley with a waterfall, a cafe and the Hermitage folly; an amazing hollowed out sandstone building with 250 year old graffiti. Just off the main A169 road near Whitby is the small hamlet of Littlebeck. There is a small car park at the start of the walk. 50 yards down the hill from the car park, a gate takes you straight into the wooded valley which follows the small river known as Littlebeck. When you reach the hermitage the path splits. Take the lower path, which follows the river and is more beautiful and varied. Be sure to stop and eat at Midge Hall where the food is very good. On leaving, turn left out of the front gate and this takes you via Falling Foss, and back on the higher path which is shorter and more gentle. This would be a 3 mile walk but you can lengthen this by taking a different path to the end of the wood. There are several paths and I recommend using the OS map OL27. The Brimham Rocks site is spectacular walking and scenery even though it is a roughly square site only a couple of kilometers wide and there are any number of beautiful photos to take. I've decided to use monochrome for these because I think it suits the subject matter but I've seen beautiful colour images of this site in exhibitions. Look out for the Brimham birch. Growing out of the rock face, this tree makes a great image from several directions. Coming from the York direction, take the B6165 out of Knaresborough signed for Pately Bridge. A short distance after the Ripley roundabout you will enter the village of Burnt Yates. Shortly after this, there is a turning off to the right signed for Brimham Rocks. There are many footpaths criss-crossing this site but you can wander around the site for free though the parking is National Trust and costs £4 if you don't have a membership. https://www.davidsaultphotography.com/hovingham-walk-1 https://images.on-this.website/6041_661866077590ed3d6ad65c.jpgHovingham Walk 1 Hovingham is a beautiful and slightly quaint old stone village, west of Malton. There are several walks that you can begin from there and because of this, I've marked this particular route in red on the map. In the village, there is a cafe (with toilet) and plenty of parking space on the road outside (marked in red). This walk is about 6 kilometres long (about two hours at a stroll) and passes through beautiful woodland and across hills with great views over the wolds in many directions. I was there on a beautiful but photographically uninteresting day with a clear blue sky at mid-day so these images reflect that situation. In evening light this walk will be exceptional. From the village, walk further down the Coulton road running west. Turn left when reaching the waymark on the left signed for Coulton (pictured in the first image). Follow the path down through the woodland - watch out for the large redwoods and out onto the wolds. The way runs through clear paths and tracks until you get into the woodland again where it joins the Ebor Way. You may need this large-scale detailed map, here because there are several paths join at the bottom of the woodland. Follow it uphill through the wood and then out the other side and over the hill for spectacular 360 degree views with skylarks, butterflies and wildflowers on the path down back into Hovingham. From York, follow the A64 for about 15 minutes and there are turnings on the right for Harton and Barton le Willows. Either of these roads will take you to Howsham. Just before Howsham there is parking on either side of the stone bridge crossing the river (marked in red on the map). NB: There is also a particularly scenic drive if you go further along the A64 and take the turning at the top of the hill to Kirkham Priory. Follow this road down into the valley, over the railway, past the priory and along the valley through Westow. However, this route is a winding country road and you may need a SatNav to find Howsham. Go through the gate by the bridge and down under the bridge to follow the path by the river for about 10 minutes to the beautiful old stone Howsham Mill. There is a lot to photograph here with river views, wild flowers, the mill and a lot of old ironwork by the mill. There is also a hide at a junction on the river where birds can be photographed. After visiting the mill, go back along the river, under the bridge and follow the path along the river in the other direction. I walked along the meadow, by the river on a sunny winter afternoon. There are majestic old oak trees and some dead trees in the river which make interesting subjects. Walk the paths of this delightful wood, especially in spring when it is carpeted with wild garlic (ramsons). Its about half a mile long. Turn left after exiting the wood and walk along the road until meeting the sign for the Minster Way. Turn right and follow the signs along to the village of Millington. Have tea and stickies at the farm in Millington and return via Woodgate to the car park. This is a short 4 mile walk, first through the wood and back, then on to beautiful views across the hillsides of the Wolds valleys. From Pocklington, take the road signed to Millington. Pass through the village onto Woodgate and you will come to a steep hill and hairpin bend. At the bottom is Millington wood. Parking is just inside the entrance to the wood. I suspect there will be dramatic shots of these in winter without the summer foliage. From Knaresborough, take the B6165 towards Pateley Bridge and about a mile out of the town, the road runs straight and rising gently towards the brow of a hill. About 100 yards over the hill, there is a car park on the left hand side. This car park is not signed well and is easy to miss, and if you see signs for Scotton on the right, then you have passed it. From the car park, follow the broad gravel path down the hill into the wood. The path turns sharp left and then you will come across the footbridge across the river. You can actually walk along both sides of the river but the main footpath runs on the other side in both directions. I walked upstream from this point as far as the viaduct. There is an abundance of things to photograph and the best thing of all is that photography is allowed. There are plenty of security people there but they don't prevent you from photographing. In today's climate of terrorist suspicion and paranoia, this is remarkable. From Leeds City station walk outside and turn left down to the traffic light crossings. Cross both roads and then turn right onto Boar Lane. Walk along and turn left onto Albion Street. Walk almost to the top of the street and on your right you will see the first arcade "King Charles Arcade". In Brandsby, there is a left turning signed for Yearsley. Take this road straight through Yearsley and drive slowly along past the wood on your right. Take the turning on the right into the wood (blink and you'll miss it) and there is space to park several cars on the left. Walk further along this track, through the gate and down the hill past the single house on your right and into the wood. Turn left down by chunky wooden seat and then take a right at the bottom of the hill past the first small lake which is now on your right. At the end of this path (look out here for the giant redwoods) turn left and follow it down through the wood to the second lake. The path takes you around the second lake. The medieval village of Wharram Percy sits on a hillside overlooking a beautiful wolds valley. This is a short 3-4 mile walk (depending how far you go along the valley) to the remains of the medieval village of Wharram Percy. Take the B1248 south of Malton. About 1 mile south of the village Wharram-le-Street, turn off onto a small side road (signposted for the Wharram Percy remains). Just past Bella farm there is a small car park. Take the gate out of the car park (opposite to where you came in). This valley path leads to the remains about 3/4 mile away. After visiting the site, you can continue along the valley with beautiful views from the hillside to join the Chalkland Way in a circuit to turn back along the road to the parking site. To be honest, the path is beautiful up to this point but quite boring after you turn left onto the Chalkland Way. Grassington is a beautiful village, a short distance along the B6265 from Pateley Bridge. If you park at the Information Centre in the village, you can walk into the village and then directly from the village centre to the river Wharfe down a marked footpath between two drystone walls. The footpath runs along the village side of the Wharfe in either direction. Upstream, there is another weir and abandoned buildings. Downstream, there are more weirs and small waterfalls. Both directions are varied and photogenic. Look out for: Stop at the bridge that crosses the river before walking along the bank. The river runs over a wier here and then through a narrow gorge, both of which are dramatic and highly photgenic. This is a beautiful walk by the River Nidd which runs through the old part of the town of Knaresborough and there enters a steep valley known as the Nidd Gorge. Public footpaths run along both sides of the river for much of the upstream direction in the Gorge. Park by the river near the Conyngham Hall gardens and walk from there in both directions. Upstream, you can walk by the river on both sides and downstream in Knaresborough itself, there is a charming riverside walk with riverside cafes and boating on the river. Walking up the hillside to the cliff top there are dramatic views over the Nidd and the ruin of Knaresborough castle. About 25 minutes from York along the main road A59. A 2-3 mile walk depending which paths you take. Photographically, this is a short but varied walk with many interesting aspects and some dramatic views. Look out for: The viaducts; dramatic from many viewpoints. I would recommend some sun protection if walking on a sunny day as the steep sided valleys are a sun trap. Both the villages are interesting photographically but I didn't have the time to explore them and will do at a later date. This area is criss-crossed with footpaths as shown on the map but the route I took was from Fridaythorpe village to Huggate village following the Wolds Way and back along the same route. Several longer circular walks could be made using the other footpaths. Ripley is a charming village with an unreal quaintness about it both beautiful and very photogenic. It is just down the road from Brimham Rocks where the A61 crosses the B6265. After walking around the Brimham Rocks site I paused here for tea and stickies and then walked around the lakes on the estate. It costs £5.00 to get into the estate, but there are footpaths that circle and cross it and I will return and explore these at some time. Its a short 3-5 mile walk (depending where you start from) through the woodland in Pickering forest by Pickering Beck. If you park in the centre of Pickering then walk up to the station and the first footpath is just further up that road, signposted on the right. Starting and ending at the station will be about 5 miles. Alternatively, for a shorter walk, drive past the station, up to the level crossing and about 50 yards before there, the road widens on the left by the track and about 3 cars can park there. The footpaths are clearly marked and easy to follow if you use the OS map (OL27), which I recommend. If you complete both parts of this walk then it is very varied photographically. The upper loop runs through beautiful woodland and follows the beck which is the size of a small shallow river. The lower part of the walk takes in wild flower hedgerows and meadows, the Tozer sculpture studio, railway sidings and the quaint and charming Pickering station where you should definitely stop and eat and wait to take a photo of the steam train. Also, on your way back to the centre of town you will pass Pickering church. Be sure to go in and marvel the stunningly beautiful medieval frescoes which have been restored.
