Plant Line and Form

Still-life images are all about shadow and light and the way light falls across and bends around the form of a three dimensional object. I think there is no other genre of photography that teaches more about light than still-life, or maybe portrait photography for the same reason.

Few other genres of photography are as absorbing or as meditative in approach, with maybe the exception of long-exposure photography of water scenes.

There is something special about natural light. I believe that our brains have been hard-wired over millennia to respond to its spectrum. Consequently, I always use the light from one window, which will wrap beautifully around any object. I accept the deep shadows or use a sheet of newspaper or card to bounce back a little light into them.
