Memento

This is a portfolio of images which explores the themes of impermanence, change and mortality. Many of these particular images could be regarded as memento mori; reminders of age and the relentless passage of time.

Necessarily, any study of these themes will include images of decay and death. However, I didn’t want to focus on just this one type of image; I wanted to broaden the portfolio and make an eclectic and more divergent exploration of this theme. Birds fly south for the winter set against an evening sky. A tree heavily deformed by age leans over a stream as an elderly man passes by. A young woman sits with her belongings waiting for a train; leaving home. Flower seeds blow across a sheet of ice; dormant until spring. Many of these images sit comfortably in the other portfolios and could be the start of a related series of images for further study.

Visual expression of this theme is perhaps easier using painting or collage where icons of mortality can be included and similarly, I’ve used photographic techniques to enhance the feeling of decay and to suggest the layering of memory over time.
